Building envelope surveys performed using infrared
thermography can quickly and non intrusively identify areas of heat loss and
exfiltration. HVAC systems design specifications are based on an understanding
of the actual building material heat transfer properties (emissivity, thermal
conductivity etc.,) and air infiltration and exfiltration. Buildings in which
heat loss exceeds the assumed values used during specification of the HVAC
system will result in either excessive system operation and costs to maintain
the desired envelope or, in extreme cases, failure of the system to meet the
desired envelope.
