These are
typical examples of successful applications of infrared thermography to either
trending or diagnosing mechanical systems and components prior to failure. The
majority of mechanical system and component failure modes and mechanisms can be
identified through trending and analysis of increased heat output resulting from
friction, vibration, misalignment, variation in either material properties or
thickness, etc. Identifying potential faults or pending failures before they
become critical allows corrective action to be scheduled with minimum disruption
to system operation; the difference between a successful preventative verses
reactive maintenance program.
