Inspection of roofing systems to identify and correct areas of localized leakage, rather than bearing the cost of a complete roofing system replacement is a well established application for infrared thermography. Areas of water intrusion are clearly visible through infrared inspection because of the significant difference between the thermal capacitance of water relative to most common building and insulation materials. Subsequently, areas that are saturated with water hold heat longer then the surrounding materials.
